A CAL FIRE Fire/EMS Dispatcher is part of the communications system that turns emergency information into a coordinated response. The Communications Operator receives and records calls, works with Computer Aided Dispatch and radio systems, dispatches resources, tracks apparatus, and relays changing information while field units are already moving toward an incident.

This Southern Region recruitment can be used to hire in multiple counties, so applicants are not applying to one single dispatch center. CAL FIRE requires a work-location form as part of the package so the hiring team can understand which Southern Region units the applicant is willing to consider.

Accuracy Matters Before the First Unit Is Dispatched

Emergency communications start with extracting the right information from a call and entering it correctly. An error in location, incident type, resource status, or radio traffic can create problems downstream, so the position rewards people who can listen carefully, type accurately, prioritize, and continue communicating clearly when several things are happening at once.

Dispatchers also notify cooperating agencies and maintain the operational records that help a communications center understand what resources are committed, where they are, and what has changed.

Radio and CAD Work Continue Throughout the Incident

  • Use Computer Aided Dispatch to enter and update incident information.
  • Operate emergency radio and 911-related communications systems.
  • Track apparatus and relay information between resources and control points.
  • Maintain logs, maps, resource records, and other communications data.

The practical skill is controlled attention. A dispatcher may need to update one incident while monitoring radio traffic for another, answer an incoming request, and preserve an accurate record of the sequence of events.

This Is a 24/7 Emergency-Service Work Environment

The posting warns applicants to expect nights, weekends, and holidays. Required training is a condition of employment, and appointment is subject to both background and medical clearance. Candidates should evaluate those conditions before applying; shift flexibility is not a minor detail in an emergency communications operation.

One Recruitment Covers a Wide Southern Region

CAL FIRE lists possible hires across numerous counties from the Central Valley and Central Coast through Southern California. Because the advertisement uses one job control for multiple potential work locations, the exact duty station should be confirmed during the recruitment process rather than inferred from the Fresno mailing address used for application packages.

The recruitment is open until filled and processes applications in rounds. A later submission may still be considered, but it will move into a later cutoff group if positions remain available.

The Required Package Has More Than the State Application

In addition to the electronic or paper STD 678, CAL FIRE requires a resume, the Authorization to Release Information form (PO-299), and the Communications Operator work-location form for this recruitment. Missing one of those items can make the package incomplete. Applicants should also make sure the working title and position number are included where the posting instructs.

How to Apply

Use the live CalCareers recruitment page for the current cutoff schedule, downloadable forms, and application methods. If your preferred work locations change after applying, follow CAL FIRE’s instructions for updating the recruitment team rather than submitting contradictory packages.
