Position Overview

Republic Services operates a current SkillBridge Program for active-duty U.S. military members who are preparing to retire or separate from service. The program provides a full-time, 3 to 6-month internship in the environmental-services industry.

Participants receive hands-on training and mentorship at Republic Services while continuing to receive their military pay and benefits. They are considered interns rather than Republic Services employees during SkillBridge participation.

Republic Services uses SkillBridge as a military-to-civilian career transition pathway. The company currently lists multiple SkillBridge career areas and locations, and successful participants can be considered for open full-time roles after completing the program.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be a current active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy and Space Force members can participate
  • Be within the eligible transition period for SkillBridge participation
  • Republic Services states training eligibility begins within 180 days before retirement or separation
  • Receive required command approval before entering the program
  • Be able to participate in a full-time schedule
  • Work at least 32 hours and no more than 40 hours per week
  • Meet any additional qualifications connected to the selected Republic Services placement

NB: Veterans who have already separated are not eligible for Republic Services SkillBridge. They should apply to normal Republic Services jobs instead.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities vary based on the SkillBridge placement. Republic Services uses the program across operational, maintenance, safety, environmental, business and leadership functions.

  • Complete structured on-the-job training
  • Work with Republic Services mentors and operational teams
  • Learn civilian environmental-services processes
  • Apply military leadership, safety and technical experience to a business environment
  • Complete placement-specific assignments and projects
  • Develop communication, task-management and workplace skills
  • Demonstrate readiness for potential civilian employment after military service

What You Will Gain

  • Three to six months of civilian-industry experience
  • Continued military pay and benefits during SkillBridge participation
  • Professional mentorship
  • Hands-on environmental-services training
  • A structured transition from military service to civilian work
  • Opportunity to build a civilian professional network
  • Consideration for available Republic Services jobs after program completion

Republic Services states that permanent employment depends on available positions and the participant’s performance, so SkillBridge participation should not be presented as a guaranteed job offer.
