The City of Austin Department of Aviation is hiring an Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator to support Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The full-time position closes August 27, 2026 and is tied closely to construction safety, contractor compliance and the airport’s ongoing expansion and capital-improvement activity.

The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, but this is not a strictly office-hours assignment. Airport construction and emergency needs can require after-hours work, weekends, holidays, overtime or on-call response.

Safety Program Responsibilities

The coordinator helps develop, administer and evaluate occupational health and safety programs. That includes writing or updating procedures, performing inspections, identifying hazards, investigating accidents and advising managers and employees on practical ways to reduce risk.

The employee also studies injury and incident trends so recurring problems can be addressed through training, process changes or corrective action.

Construction Safety at AUS

A major part of the job is connected to construction. The coordinator supports the airport’s Rolling Owner Controlled Insurance Program, known as ROCIP AUS, and works with contractors participating in large capital projects.

Responsibilities include construction-site safety audits, technical consultation, contractor-safety standards, coordination with insurance loss-control specialists and follow-up on findings that require corrective action.

Minimum Qualifications

The City lists a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related field plus four years of experience in the occupational health and safety specialization. Relevant experience may substitute for education within the City’s stated equivalency rules.

A valid Texas driver license is required. Applicants should also be prepared to work around active construction and airport operating areas.

Preferred Experience

The posting favors candidates who have led or coordinated safety programs on large construction projects and who understand OSHA 1926 construction standards.

Experience auditing projects with several high-risk activities, working with an owner-controlled insurance program or holding credentials such as ASP, CSP or CSHO can strengthen the application.

Incident Investigation and Training

The coordinator investigates accidents and incidents, looks for root causes and recommends measures intended to prevent recurrence. This requires careful documentation because findings can affect contractors, employees, insurance activity and management decisions.

Training is another part of the position. The employee may provide or coordinate OSHA-related instruction, drills and other safety programs for airport staff and contractors.

Airport Security and Essential Work

The top candidate is subject to airport security screening, including criminal-history and security-threat reviews. The position is also treated as essential for airport operations, so emergency or severe-weather conditions can affect work requirements.

Applicants should describe the scale of construction projects they supported, the hazards they managed and any direct responsibility for audits, investigations or contractor safety.

How to Apply

Apply through the City of Austin Workday careers page for requisition JR104765. Complete the application itself carefully because the City uses it to evaluate whether the minimum experience requirements are met.
