Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is accepting applications for its Computing Undergraduate Student Intern – Fall 2026 program in Livermore, California. Multiple openings are available, with pay from $23.26 to $31.62 per hour at the 705.1 undergraduate-student level.
The internship runs from September 1 through December 18, 2026, and applications close August 28. Depending on the research assignment, some interns may have a hybrid schedule that combines onsite and virtual work.
Research Areas
Interns can support projects in computational science, cyber defense, computer science, numerical methods, mathematics and other related STEM areas.
The assignment is not limited to classroom-style exercises. Students work with scientists, engineers and technical staff and contribute technical or research support to real Laboratory projects.
What Interns Do
Students participate in supervised research, gather and analyze data and take part in research-planning and evaluation discussions.
The program also includes professional-development activities. Interns attend relevant seminars at least once per week and present their work through presentations or poster sessions.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must be continuing undergraduate students in good standing at an accredited college or university and be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity or another related STEM field.
Students starting a graduate program in winter or spring 2027 are directed to apply for the separate Computing Scholar Graduate posting instead.
GPA and Skills
A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, and interns must be at least 18 years old at the start of the program.
LLNL also expects basic computational-science or mathematical problem-solving ability, effective communication, teamwork and familiarity with common computer tools such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Pay, Benefits and Access Requirements
The 705.1 pay range is $23.26 to $31.62 per hour. LLNL also lists holiday pay, sick-leave accrual and individual 401(k) contributions for the internship.
No security clearance is required. However, applicants must meet Laboratory-access requirements under the applicable NDAA rules, and external candidates selected for the position must pass a post-offer drug test.
