BNSF Railway is recruiting for Track Maintenance (Laborer, Truck Driver, Welder) work supporting the Morris, Minnesota and Aberdeen, South Dakota area. The current listing shows four positions and entry pay of approximately $37.66 to $41.97 per hour.
This is a full-time, physically demanding railroad-maintenance job. Employees work on the track structure and right of way and can be assigned to labor, truck-driving or welding duties depending on qualifications and crew needs.
Track Repair and Maintenance
Track-maintenance employees repair and rebuild railroad track by pulling spikes, cutting, welding or drilling rail and performing other maintenance needed to keep the railroad safe for train operations.
The work also includes maintaining the track bed, manually compressing ballast, removing and installing ties and replacing, cutting or adjusting rail.
Tools, Trucks and Welding
Employees use powered and non-powered tools such as drills, impact wrenches, jacks, saws, grinders, shovels and picks.
Truck-driver assignments can involve 26,000-pound-plus vehicles along with equipment maintenance and recordkeeping. Welder duties can include welding, grinding and cutting rail, maintaining welding records and supplies and operating welding trucks safely.
Travel and Schedule
The position is scheduled for 40 hours per week but can include on-call work, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends and holidays.
Travel is a major requirement. Employees may remain at job sites for days or weeks at a time within their seniority region. Maintenance-of-Way employees also have residency requirements tied to the hired district or designated BNSF depots.
Physical and Safety Requirements
Applicants must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds, walk and work on uneven surfaces, bend and stand for extended periods and climb on or off equipment.
Work takes place around heavy and moving machinery and in weather that can include heat, cold, rain, snow and sleet. BNSF also requires the ability to distinguish signal colors and hear and understand alarms and communications.
Basic Qualifications and Training
A valid state-issued driver’s license is required, along with the ability to communicate in English and report to the designated work location. Applicants must be able to work in the U.S. without present or future BNSF sponsorship.
BNSF provides company-paid on-the-job and classroom training, which can include travel to the BNSF Training Center. The role is union-represented under the applicable Maintenance-of-Way agreement.
