The Physician and Surgeon at the Veterans Home of California – West Los Angeles provides ongoing medical care in a residential setting. The job is responsible for an assigned group of residents and also supervises nurses, attendants, and others involved in their care. That creates a different rhythm from a short outpatient encounter: decisions have to account for the resident’s current condition, history, medications, referrals, long-term needs, and the work of the surrounding care team.

The strongest fit is a physician comfortable making independent clinical decisions while also documenting thoroughly and communicating with staff, consultants, residents, and families. CalVet places the position within Medical Service at the West Los Angeles home, where continuity and coordination are central to resident care.

Resident Care Includes Follow-Through After the Examination

The physician’s work extends beyond diagnosing and treating an immediate complaint. Responsibilities include preventive care, rounds, review of diagnostic information, referrals when specialty care is needed, and follow-up on the results of those decisions. In a residential setting, a medical plan has to be clear enough for the rest of the team to carry forward between physician encounters.

Medical records are therefore part of the clinical responsibility rather than an administrative afterthought. Accurate documentation supports medication decisions, referrals, changes in condition, interdisciplinary communication, and continuity when another clinician becomes involved.

The Position Also Carries Supervisory Responsibility

CalVet specifically states that the physician supervises nurses, attendants, and others engaged in resident care. Candidates should be prepared to show how they give clinical direction, address concerns raised by other staff, and keep care aligned when several professionals are involved.

  • Provide medical care for an assigned resident population.
  • Participate in rounds and interdisciplinary care discussions.
  • Review diagnostic results and coordinate referrals.
  • Maintain medical records and communicate with families or consultants as appropriate.
  • Supervise care staff within the physician’s assigned responsibilities.

Licensure and State Eligibility Both Have to Be Resolved

The recruitment requires the applicable medical license, and CalVet says a copy must be provided before hire. The candidate must also establish eligibility for the Physician and Surgeon State classification before a job offer. Those are separate requirements: professional licensure permits medical practice, while the State examination or another valid appointment route establishes civil-service eligibility.

Live Scan and a pre-employment physical are part of the hiring process. Applicants using an education-based minimum-qualification pattern may also be asked for transcripts during appointment verification.

Keep the Application Focused on the Actual Medical Assignment

The required package includes the STD 678 and a resume. On the State application, describe clinical duties with enough detail for a reviewer to understand patient population, decision-making responsibility, supervisory experience, and any work relevant to residential, geriatric, long-term, or interdisciplinary care. Do not assume a medical title by itself explains the scope.

This recruitment remains open until filled and uses monthly cutoff dates. Applications submitted after one cutoff can move to a later round while the vacancy remains open.
