Application Deadline24 August 2026

MiraCosta College’s Library Technician III position is unusually broad for a classified library role. It combines public-service operations with responsibility for the systems that keep those services working: the integrated library platform, reporting, automation, user records, interlibrary lending, serials, technology loans, and day-to-day coordination at the library.

The regular assignment is split between the San Elijo and Oceanside campuses, and the district can assign staff to other facilities as operational needs require. After successful probation, limited telework may be available one day per week, but this remains an on-campus service job with a strong systems component.

Daily Operations and Library Systems Meet in One Role

The technician helps oversee routine library operations, resolves smaller patron or equipment issues, explains policies, and escalates matters that require a manager. At the same time, the position serves as a lead administrator for the library services platform and related systems. That mix means the person has to move comfortably between a user problem at the service point and a configuration or data problem behind the scenes.

MiraCosta specifically identifies cloud-based library platform administration, testing, troubleshooting, reporting, and end-user training. Experience with Ex Libris Alma and Primo is desirable, as is the ability to build or maintain Alma Analytics reports.

Technical Library Knowledge Goes Well Beyond Circulation

  • MARC 21 and library classification systems.
  • OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing and interlibrary loan workflows.
  • RFID, technology loans, smart lockers, printers, copiers, and related equipment.
  • Student-account and patron database updates tied to overdue records and fees.
  • Serials control, purchasing, inventory, statistics, reports, and procedure documentation.

That breadth makes the role better suited to someone who has already worked in a technical or operational library setting than to a candidate whose experience is limited to shelving or front-desk service.

Lead Work Is Part of the Position

The Library Technician III verifies work, helps organize assignments, trains staff and student workers, maintains schedules, and participates in hiring recommendations. It is not described as the library manager, but it carries lead responsibilities that require tact, consistency, and the ability to explain procedures to people with different levels of experience.

The public-service side remains important. The employee assists patrons, supports academic reserves, helps with borrowing options, opens the San Elijo Library and Information Hub, and works with other campus departments to maintain continuity of service.

Minimum Preparation and Work Conditions

The stated minimum is a bachelor’s degree plus three years of directly related work experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The district also lists an academic-library background and Alma/Primo experience as desirable rather than presenting them as universal minimum requirements.

The job involves frequent standing and walking, bending and stooping, computer use, and lifting or carrying items up to 35 pounds. Employees can also be asked to work at different district locations and, when needed, during evening or occasional weekend hours. Classified staff are subject to MiraCosta’s California residency rule described in the posting.

Prepare All Four Parts of the Application

MiraCosta requires a completed online application, a targeted cover letter, a current resume or CV, and transcripts showing how the minimum qualifications are met. A candidate using education from outside the United States must also follow the district’s credential-evaluation instructions. Because the screening committee evaluates the application itself, “see resume” is not an adequate substitute for relevant experience in the form.

Check the confirmation number after submission and keep copies of the documents used. The employer notes that an offer is contingent on additional pre-employment requirements such as fingerprint clearance, a physical examination, tuberculosis clearance, work-eligibility verification, and Board approval.
