The Virginia Department of Health is recruiting Public Health Nurses for the Chesapeake Health District. The multi-hire recruitment lists a salary range of $54,794.97 to $75,902.24 and closes August 26, 2026.
The nurses will work with the BabyCare program, which provides home-visiting and case-management services to medically and socially underserved maternity and pediatric clients. This is a community public-health role focused on helping families reduce risks connected to infant mortality, premature birth and other maternal-child health concerns.
BabyCare Home-Visiting Work
BabyCare nurses work directly with clients in the community instead of providing only clinic-based care. The program has served Chesapeake families for many years and uses case management to connect medical assessment, education and community services.
The nurse needs to understand both the clinical and social factors that can affect pregnancy, infants and children. That can require interviewing clients, identifying barriers and helping families follow through with referrals or health recommendations.
Skills Required for the Position
The posting calls for skills in physical examination, health assessment, interviewing and counseling. Nurses also need to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, analyze problems and suggest solutions.
Because home-visiting and case-management work is often independent, the employee must organize priorities, solve problems, adapt when circumstances change and still function effectively as part of a larger health-district team.
Public Health Knowledge
Applicants need knowledge of public-health concepts and principles of public-health nursing, along with epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology and case management.
Additional study in health promotion or public health is preferred. Experience in a public-health setting or work related to disease prevention and health promotion is also listed as an additional consideration.
Grant-Funded Position
This is a restricted position funded through Title IV for the current July 2026 to July 2028 period. Continued employment depends on the continued availability of funding.
Candidates should understand that the funding status is part of the employment terms even though the role is listed as full-time.
