Denver International Airport is currently offering a Fleet Technician Internship for students or recent graduates building a career in automotive or fleet maintenance. The internship pays approximately $19.29 to $21.80 per hour and is fully onsite at DEN.

The assignment is designed as a 6- to 12-month training experience. Interns work with the airport’s Fleet Maintenance team and receive hands-on exposure to a much broader equipment mix than they would usually see in a standard automotive shop.

Vehicles and Equipment You May Work Around

DEN’s fleet includes light-duty cars and trucks, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, police motorcycles, aircraft rescue and firefighting trucks and a large fleet used for advanced snow removal.

That variety gives the intern a chance to learn how preventive maintenance and repair practices change across passenger vehicles, commercial equipment, emergency vehicles and specialized airport machinery.

What the Internship Is Designed to Teach

The intern trains under experienced fleet technicians and supports real maintenance work while learning shop procedures, inspection routines, preventive maintenance, diagnosis and repair methods.

Assignments are supervised and are intended to build practical technical skills rather than simply provide observation. The intern may help inspect equipment, identify maintenance needs, prepare vehicles for service and learn how repairs are documented in a large municipal fleet.

Student Eligibility

The minimum education requirement is current enrollment in an accredited trades or vocational program leading to a certificate, licensure or associate degree related to the work assignment. Recent graduates can also qualify if they completed the program within the previous year.

Experience cannot simply replace the education requirement. ASE certification in Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck areas is considered a plus, but the posting does not make it mandatory.

Schedule

This is an on-call or part-time internship with a schedule that can be adjusted around current academic commitments. Hours are capped at 60 over a two-week pay period, which works out to an average maximum of about 30 hours per week.

The role is fully onsite because the training involves vehicles, tools and shop work at Denver International Airport.

Why the Airport Fleet Is Different

Airport vehicles operate in a demanding environment where equipment availability affects passenger operations, snow response, public safety and emergency readiness. Maintenance therefore needs to be documented and completed consistently.

For a student interested in diesel, heavy equipment, municipal fleet or airport operations, the internship provides exposure that can be difficult to obtain from a small private repair shop.

How to Apply

Apply through the City and County of Denver Workday careers page for requisition R0082062. Make sure the application shows your current or recent vocational program and any automotive, diesel, shop or ASE experience you already have.
