The Allegheny County Airport Authority is hiring an Environmental Field Technician to support environmental compliance programs connected to Pittsburgh International Airport. The full-time opening was posted August 3 and is scheduled to close August 31, 2026.
This is a hands-on environmental role. The technician will spend time on inspections, environmental sampling, data analysis and regulatory support rather than working only on reports in an office.
Field Inspection Work
The technician inspects Airport Authority facilities as well as tenant and contractor operations. Inspection areas can include waste-storage locations, tanks, dams, stormwater basins and other facilities covered by environmental requirements.
The goal is to identify conditions that could create a compliance problem and make sure required environmental controls are being followed.
Water and Stormwater Sampling
The job includes collection of regulatory drinking-water and stormwater samples. The technician needs to follow required procedures so results can be used for compliance and reporting.
Experience with water chemistry is preferred, and the employee may also work with environmental data to identify trends in program performance.
Airport Environmental Programs
Aircraft deicing is one of the airport-specific environmental areas supported by the position. Deicing activity can affect stormwater management, so the technician helps track performance and compliance.
The role also supports the airport’s drinking-water distribution program and can respond to spills or remediation needs when an environmental incident occurs.
Education and Entry-Level Experience
Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Geology or a related field. The listing calls for zero to one year of environmental field experience, making the job suitable for candidates near the beginning of an environmental career.
GIS and water-chemistry experience are preferred. Candidates should highlight field sampling, laboratory interpretation, environmental coursework, internships or inspection experience where applicable.
Reports and Regulatory Support
The technician reviews environmental requirements and prepares compliance, technical and procedural reports. The employee also tracks and models data and helps the Authority understand environmental-program trends.
The ability to read laboratory results and turn technical information into accurate records is important even though much of the job takes place in the field.
