Position Overview

Peoples Gas System, part of the TECO Energy careers network, is recruiting two Engineer I positions in Tampa, Florida. The role supports local and territory gas operations while also providing engineering design and project-management support for major natural gas main expansion projects.

This is a full-time engineering opportunity suited to candidates who already have an ABET-accredited engineering degree and some professional engineering experience. The schedule is listed as an 8-hour shift, five days per week, with overtime and emergency-response participation possible when operational conditions require it.

The Engineer I works on routine engineering assignments using established techniques, procedures and criteria, while receiving closer supervision on new or non-routine work. The position also gives the successful candidate exposure to construction activity, pipeline operations, contractors, vendors and internal operations teams.

NB: Peoples Gas states that team members can receive incident-response assignments for major storms, gas leaks, equipment failures and other emergencies that affect public safety or service continuity.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the core requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • At least 18 months of related experience as an Engineer, or 12 months of Engineer experience with the FE exam passed
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and alignment sheets
  • Logical problem-solving and analytical ability
  • Sound judgment and willingness to perform during emergency situations
  • Ability to work inside and outside for extended periods

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination
  • At least six months of natural gas industry experience
  • AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project

Tip: On your resume, connect engineering projects to design, construction coordination, utilities, pipelines, project scheduling or technical problem solving rather than only listing software names.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support local and territory operations personnel with engineering needs
  • Provide engineering design for gas-main expansion work
  • Assist with project management and project coordination
  • Perform routine engineering analyses under established methods
  • Prepare specifications, technical reports and engineering documentation
  • Support broader assignments led by experienced engineers
  • Coordinate projects with supervision and review
  • Gather information and provide management updates on engineering and operations issues
  • Provide feedback and updates related to pipeline-supplier issues
  • Work with contractors, vendors, inspectors, customers and operations staff

The job includes field exposure, so the Engineer I should be comfortable moving between office-based engineering work and project or construction environments.

What You Will Gain

  • Hands-on experience in natural gas utility engineering
  • Exposure to gas-main expansion and construction projects
  • Project-management and coordination experience
  • Experience working with operations teams, contractors and suppliers
  • Technical-report and specification-writing experience
  • Career development within a growing Florida utility
  • Access to training and tuition-reimbursement opportunities

Peoples Gas also advertises a broad total-rewards package including an annual incentive bonus, health coverage, 401(k), pension, paid leave, parental leave, wellness programs and an employee share purchase plan.
